IE9, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera: Beta Browser Speed Test

browser-beta-speed-test-ie9-firefox-safari-chrome-operaMicrosoft's Internet Explorer 9 beta browser, launched last week, isn't only leaner and cleaner in its interface but also boasts of faster Web page rendering (apart from GPU acceleration). We decided to put IE9 beta's claim to the test by pitting it against the competition: Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and Opera Web browsers.

For the sake of this browser speed test, we downloaded and installed the latest beta build versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera Web browsers. IE9 beta (build 9.0.7930.16406), Firefox 4 beta 6 (4.0b6), Chrome 7 (build 7.0.517.8 beta), Apple Safari 5.0.2 (build 7533.18.5), and Opera 10.70 (build 9050) all formed the basis of our beta browser speed test.
We tested the browsers on the following PC configuration: An Intel Core i3-550 3.2-GHz processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB 7200 rpm hard drive, ATI Radeon HD 5670 (1GB) graphics, Windows 7 Ultimate operating system, and the Dell UltraSharp U2711 monitor (2560x1440 pixel resolution).
GPU Acceleration: First off we ran the FishIE Tank visual demo from Microsoft.com to get an indicative score of IE9, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera browser's GPU acceleration capabilities. Obiously, since it's a Microsoft's browser GPU acceleration demo, it runs best on Internet Explorer 9 beta and fast -- while the other browsers don't even come close to matching it in terms of speed. We ran the FishIE Tank test on all five beta web browsers with 1000 fishes in full-screen mode (2560x1440).
FishIE Tank score: IE9 beta, Firefox 4 beta 6, Chrome 7 beta, Safari 5.0.2, Opera 10.70 beta browser speed test
IE9 beta took the honors here with an average fps of 47 frames, while Firefox 4 beta 6 came in second with 24 fps.
HTML5 Test: Part of the "next-gen" tag attributed to popular Web browsers today has a lot to do with their HTML5 compatibility. Internet Explorer 9 beta, Firefox 4 beta 6 (Gecko), Chrome 7 beta (WebKit), Safari 5.0.2 (WebKit), and Opera 10.70 (Presto) beta all have improved HTML5 support from previous versions. In our beta browser speed test, Google Chrome 7 beta raced ahead of the pack with a score of 231, while Mozilla Firefox 4 beta 6 came second with 204 points -- IE9 beta came in last with 96 points.
HTML5 test for Internet Explorer 9 beta, Mozilla Firefox 4 beta 6, Google Chrome 7 beta, Apple Safari 5.0.2, and Opera 10.70
Acid3: Prominently referred by many browser speed test and comparison stories, Acid3 tests a browser's capability to follow select Web standards elements. Many browsers today -- Opera, Safari, Chrome -- have managed to ace the Acid3 score of 100/100. That story continues with the latest beta builds of Opera, Safari, and Chrome Web browsers. Mozilla Firefox 4 beta 6 managed 97/100 while Internet Explorer 9 beta scored 95/100 on Acid3 -- a slight improvement over IE9's technical preview.
Acid3 - Internet Explorer 9 beta, Mozilla Firefox 4 beta 6, Google Chrome 7 beta, Apple Safari 5.0.2, Opera 10.70 beta
JSBenchmark: JSBenchmark is a quick benchmarking utility used to evaluate and compare Javascript engines of Web browsers. In our beta browser speed test, Google Chrome 7 beta again trumped the others with a JSBenchmark score of 827.33, Opera 10.70 beta came in second with 649.33 JSBenchmark points. Mozilla Firefox 4 beta 6 managed the lowest JSBenchmark score of 456.33 points.
JSBenchmark score - Internet Explorer 9 beta, Mozilla Firefox 4 beta 6, Google Chrome 7 beta, Apple Safari 5.0.2, Opera 10.70 beta
Final Thoughts: So out of the four browser beta speed tests, IE9 beta managed to get ahead of Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera in only one test -- GPU acceleration. It plays catch up on all other fronts with the competition. Google's latest Chrome 7 beta shows a lot of promise as it finished on top in 3 out of 4 browser speed tests, making it the fastest browser within these tests. Firefox, Opera and Safari Web browsers, from the evidence, have work to do to give Google Chrome a run for its money.
Note: We tried to do the browser speed test by downloading the latest version of the five most popular Web browsers -- Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and Opera -- available as of yesterday. We would also like to point out that for the comprehensivity of the article, we had to feature Apple Safari's 5.0.2 even though it isn't technically a beta build of the browser.

Nokia N8 official! Price, specs and pics!

n8_launch_thumbGLOBAL – The Nokia N8 today officially emerges into the daylight, stepping out of the shadows equipped with a host of smartphone talents. The first device to be powered by the brand new Symbian^3 platform, the Nokia N8 will launch with a new breed of camera that promises to capture photos and video to rival dedicated point and shoot cameras. Read on to explore Nokia N8′s full list of talents.

The biggest feature on the Nokia N8 is its 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon flash. It features a substantially larger sensor than any ever used in any other Nokia device – even bigger than many found in dedicated cameras. Recently, we caught up with Nokia’s resident camera guru, Damian Dinning, to get the full lowdown on what went into fine-tuning the N8′s camera and video capture skills – you’ll be able to read the full fact-packed story right here on Conversations this week, so stay tuned.
Check out the first sample images from the Nokia N8
The Nokia N8 also introduces the ability to record high definition videos and edit them with a smart built-in editing suite on the device. Playback quality is just as important, and the 3.5-inch HD capacitive touchscreen is the ideal window for assessing your flicks and footage. There’s also a HDMI connector allowing you to hook the smartphone to your HD TV and share your media with friends and family in superb quality. We wanted to find out more about the benefits of HDMI in the Nokia N8 so we spoke to Paul Wheeler, a software program manager at Nokia, to get the full story – again, be sure to keep an eye out for our full story this later this week.
Check out the first HD video sample from the Nokia N8
The Nokia N8 also doubles as a portable entertainment centre. Watch HD quality video with Dolby Digital Plus surround sound and hook into a dedicated Web TV application for access to news and entertainment on the move.
It’s not just its 12-megapixel camera and HD video skills with HDMI support that set the Nokia N8 apart from the crowd. Packing more memory than most, the Nokia N8 has 16GB of built-in storage and is expandable up to 48GB with a micro SD card.
Joining the social messaging fold with the likes of the latest Eseries and Cseries devices, the N8 enters the fray with live Twitter and Facebook updates direct to your homescreen. Comment, read and send messages, update your status and share your location and photos with one touch.
Embracing location based services, the N8 is location-savvy and comes with free global Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation with support in more than 70 countries worldwide.
Powering the Nokia N8 is the all-new Symbian^3 platform. This latest incarnation introduces major new advances including multi-touch and support for gestures such as pinch-to-zoom. Onboard there’s also three customisable homescreens that can be loaded with applications and widgets and flicked through by a swish of the finger. There’s also improved 2D and 3D graphics for a faster and more responsive UI, greater memory management and a visual task manager.
Of course, the Nokia N8 comes with access to the full range of Ovi services and it’s Nokia’s first smartphone to be integrated with Qt. Got and idea for an app? Qt is a software development environment that makes it a cinch to build apps and deploy across the Symbian and other software platforms.
Not to be outdone by its innards the Nokia N8 is carved from a single piece of anodised aluminium and looks glorious decked in one of five eye-catching colours (we’ll shortly be bringing you an entire article dedicated to the colours). It will cost €370 (before the usual local taxes and subsidies) when it starts shipping in the third quarter of 2010.
Over the coming week we’ll bring you heaps more insight and info surrounding the new Nokia N8, including designer interviews, exclusive videos, and much more. Stay tuned for all our unmissable coverage throughout the week. In the meantime, share your instant reactions and let us know what you want to know about the Nokia N8 by joining the conversation below.

Nokia & Intel Introduce MeeGo | A Universal Linux-Base Platform

The first announcement by Nokia at Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona is the introduction of MeeGo. In a significant development in the convergence of communications and computing, Intel Corporation and Nokia are merging their popular Moblin and Maemo software platforms. This will create a unified Linux-based platform that will run on multiple hardware platforms across a wide range of computing devices, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, media phones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems. Called MeeGo, the open software platform will accelerate industry innovation and time-to-market for a wealth of new Internet-based applications and services and exciting user experiences. MeeGo-based devices from Nokia and other manufacturers are expected to be launched later this year. This announcement strengthens the Nokia and Intel relationship, and builds on the companies’ broad strategic collaboration announced in June 2009. Intel and Nokia now invite participation in MeeGo from existing Maemo and Moblin global communities and across the communications and computing industries. “Our vision for seamlessly communicating between computing devices from the home, auto, office or your pocket is taking a big step forward today with the introduction of MeeGo,” said Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini. “This is a foundational step in our evolving relationship with Nokia. The merging of these two important assets into an open source platform is critical toward providing a terrific experience across a variety of devices and gaining cross industry support.”
