Nokia N8 vs. the smartphone elite: iPhone 4, HTC EVO 4G, Palm Pre Plus, and HTC HD2

Engadget has made a comparison of the iPhone 4 against what they call the smartphone elite – representatives of respective Mobile OS – HTC Evo 4G for Android, Nokia N8 for Symbian, Palm Pre Plus for WebOS and HTC HD2 for Windows Mobile. Based on the hardware categories chosen, the N8 stacks up surprisingly well (and nice of engadget to recognize N8 amongst the “elite”).

Nokia 5228 is the cheaper GPS-less non-3G twin bro of 5230

Yesterday, kind of secretly, Nokia announced the 5228. At first look you will hardly find difference between the newbie and its sibling, the Nokia 5230. But that’s only because it is hidden deep under the hood: the new Nokia 5228 is the GPS-less version of the 5230.
The 5228 also lacks 3G support. But wait, wasn’t there already a device like that? Does the name Nokia 5233 ring a bell?
Other than that 5230 and 5228 share the same hardware and software. They both feature 3.2″ resistive touchscreens of 360 x 640 pixel resolution, 2-megapixel fixed focus cameras with video recording. And here comes another, this time minor, difference: while the Nokia 5230 can shoot VGA videos at 30fps the 5228 is able of only taking nHD videos (640 x 360 pixels @ 30fps), though we suspect that this might be a typo.

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic gets updated, v. 30.0.009 now available

One of Nokia’s most affordable smartphones, the full touch 5530 XpressMusic, has just got a software update. The new firmware version 30.0.009 is said to bring universal kinetic scrolling to the 5530 as well as some other goodies. While the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic had kinetic scrolling right from the very start but now users will get to enjoy the feature throughout the whole UI. The web browser is also updated to version 7.2.3 so it features improved kinetic scrolling and full screen mode is now set by default. 5530 users are also getting two new apps (Ovi Sync and Shazam) and what is more important: better RAM optimization. The fresher firmware v30.0.009 gives you 2MB more free RAM. The music player icons have also undergone some minor design changes.

Chart of the Day: Apple Vs. Nokia

The chart of the day shows how Apple and Nokia market values have switched places in 10 years. Apple’s $247 billion market value today is about where Nokia’s was in 2000. That’s when Apple’s main product was the Macintosh computer.

Nokia N8 to be final Symbian N-Series device, MeeGo taking over

According to the Nokia people that CNET spoke to, the Nokia N8 will be the last N-series to run on Nokia’s Symbian platform, all N-Series from here on will run MeeGo. Lets hope that this is true since Nokia really gonna need MeeGo to compete with Apples iOS 4 and Android. What do you guys say? Should Nokia stick with Symbian on their top smartphones or should they go with MeeGo instead?
